Stage 13 Breakdown:

Stage 13 takes the riders on a hilly 205.8km journey from Dole to Belfort. As the longest stage of the Tour, endurance will play a key role, but the real action is saved for the final third of the day. With around 2400m of climbing, this looks like an ideal stage for a strong breakaway, although the GC teams may also be tempted to test each other on the final climb.

The opening 140 kilometres are almost entirely flat before the race reaches the Vosges. The riders first tackle the Col des Croix before the historic Ballon d’Alsace, 8.9km at 6.9%, with the summit just over 30 kilometres from the finish. A fast descent and rolling roads lead into Belfort, where a technical finale could reward riders who still have something left after the final climb.

The long, flat opening makes the battle for the breakaway particularly important, as many riders will target this stage. If the right group goes clear, they have an excellent chance of staying away, but any attacks from the GC favorites on the Ballon d’Alsace could also make for an exciting finale.
