Stage 19

Stage 19 Breakdown:

Stage 19 takes the riders on a mountainous 127.9km journey from Gap to Alpe d’Huez. Although one of the shortest stages of the Tour, it packs around 3500m of climbing into a relentless route and marks the first of two consecutive finishes on the legendary Alpe d’Huez. The compact distance and explosive profile leave little room for recovery, making this a day where the racing is expected to be aggressive from the very start.

The stage begins with the ascent of the Col Bayard before the road immediately rises again over the Col du Noyer, a demanding 7.2km climb averaging 8.5%. After a technical descent, the riders tackle the Col d’Ornon, which further softens the legs before the iconic final ascent. Alpe d’Huez needs little introduction: 13.8km at an average gradient of 8.1%, featuring its famous 21 hairpin bends. While the climb is steady rather than brutally steep, the relentless pace and accumulated fatigue make it one of the most prestigious summit finishes in cycling.

The short distance means the GC teams are unlikely to allow the race to settle, with attacks potentially beginning as early as the Col du Noyer. A strong breakaway could still survive if the favorites hesitate or stay content in their positions. Nonetheless, the final climb to Alpe d’Huez should provide another spectacular showdown between the Tour’s best climbers.
